How Does The PERMA Model Work?

Each of the five mountains you climb will teach you how to live a more integrated life. At the same time, each section of the PERMA+ Model will help you to improve your happiness and decrease the addictions causing stress in your life.

The core goal is to work on what’s right with you rather than what’s wrong with you. Plenty of therapies will point out your issues and list all the ways you need to change, but in my experience, that isn’t always helpful. Decrease psychological distress and increase overall health and wellness by positively working on yourself. The PERMA+ Model covers five different aspects of your life.

How Does The PERMA Model Work?

(P) Positive Emotion

Positive emotion refers to any emotion that makes you feel good. This includes happiness, gratitude, joy, etc. And while happiness isn’t something anyone should chase, it can be cultivated and created in our everyday lives. Finding ways to bring positive emotion to the forefront of your day is one of the first steps we will take when working together. When you no longer rely on outside circumstances to provide “good” feelings, you will be less susceptible to stress and poor coping patterns, i.e., addictions.

(E) Engagement

One of the biggest reasons we turn to drugs and alcohol is to disengage. The longer it goes on, the more difficult re-engaging with reality will be. For that reason, it’s the second step in the PERMA+ Model. We must first reconnect with the present to rediscover what’s right with you. This will look different for each of my clients because everyone connects with the present differently. Some reconnect by practicing meditation or starting a creative project, while others may spend time in nature. Finding what works for you is a crucial part of the process.

(R) Positive Relationships

The relationships we pursue often define who we are or will become. They can be a stress point or a safe place to retreat. When we dive into treatment, the goal will be to cultivate relationships that make you feel supported and loved. According to the NIH, “humans are inherently social.” While this surprises no one, our close relationships are often the first to suffer when dealing with addiction and stress. It’s crucial to recognize the importance of our intimate relationships and learn how to prioritize them accordingly.

(M) Meaning

Our desire for meaning is what sets humans apart from animals. Meaning is our sense of purpose. It’s what drives us to develop and accomplish goals. Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly trying to find meaning in everything around us. However, we only find this meaning when we focus on finding our purpose. This could be through a higher power, our career, or anything else that allows us to zoom out and focus on our impact on others. It’s about recognizing that this life is about more than ourselves. Searching for your sense of purpose is a process that starts with identifying your values and putting them into practice, whatever way you choose.

(A) Accomplishments and Achievements

Accomplishments and achievements are a vital part of the PERMA Model. Achieving a goal will drive you to attempt to achieve more. When these goals align with your purpose, you can truly thrive. As you see your accomplishments come together, you will gain a sense of pride for what you’ve been able to do and how it has shaped your life.

PLUS In PERMA

Fitness, Nutrition, and Sleep. Addiction, no matter the type, harms your body in one way or another. If you’re addicted to alcohol, your body has likely suffered liver damage. If you’re addicted to opioids, your brain may not be functioning at the level you need. A vital component of treatment is to repair that damage.

Healing your body from the effects of addiction is crucial to recovery.

SLEEP

Addiction wreaks havoc on your sleep schedule. Even if you sleep every night, you may not be getting proper rest. Studies show that disturbances in your sleep increase the risk of alcohol relapse, making it vital for addiction recovery.

NUTRITION

Some addictions can cause you to either under or overeat. Fueling yourself with the proper nutrition will give your body the necessary nutrients to fix the damage while providing you with better energy and mental clarity.

FITNESS

Addiction provides a dopamine spike, one that is difficult to put down. Exercising offers this as well, only naturally. Because of that, you won’t suffer the crash often associated with addiction.

Focusing on all three aspects of your health will allow you to regain control of your life and well-being while improving your mental capabilities.
